Exchange rates
To calculate the value of a transaction in a specific currency other then the currency the transaction is entered,
you need to enter the exchange rate(s) for the currencies involved (if not the default currency).
This is the exchange rate of the currency in wich the transaction is entered,
and the exchange rate of the currency you want to view the value of the selected transactions.
If a transaction is missing an exchange rate to show the correct value,
background of the amount and currency part of the transaction is colored reddish.
In this case a exchange rate of 1:1 is assumed!

Viewing exchange rates
In menu: Finances > Exchange rates you can invoke the list of already entered exchange rates.
There are two ways to look at exchange rates:
- view all exchange rates at once
- view exchange rates filtered by currency

Entering exchange rates
When entering a new exchange rate or editing and existing one, you can edit following data:
- Currency - the target currency
- Date - date of exchange rate
- Unit - of exchange from 1 / 1000 to 1000 (multiplication factor of entered exchange rate)
- Exchange rates (Selling, Middle, Buying) - exchange rate (one can enter only the middle or all three)
You can enter only one exchange rate (the buy and sell are copied from the middle exchange rate)
All all three exchange rates
Recalculation from currency to currency
Monex supports two different ways of calculating the value of transactions in different currencies.
- Calculate over the buy and sell exchange rate
- Calculate with the middle exchange rate
Currently the setting is by default set to do the calculation over the middle exchange rate.
Calculation with the middle exchange rate
Let's say our default currency is the EUR (Euro),
and we have two additional currencies involved USD (US dollar) and CHF (Swiss franc).
If we now have the following exchange rates entered:
| Currency | Unit | Middle exchange rate |
|---|---|---|
| USD | 1 | 2 |
| CHF | 1 / 10 | 0,05 |
In this example for instance you would get:
- 1USD = 2EUR, or 1EUR = 0,5USD.
- 1CHF = (0,05 * 1/10) = 0,5EUR, or 1EUR = 2CHF.
Monex can now calculate how much is 1USD worth in CHF?
The calculation over the middle exchange rate is: 1USD = 2EUR, where 1EUR = 2CHF, meaning 2EUR = 4CHF, and therefore 1USD = 4CHF.
Calculation with the sell and buy exchange rate
If the calculation setting is set to use the buying and selling exchange rate the example could look as follows:
| Currency | Unit | Selling | Buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD | 1 | 2 | 2,2 |
| CHF | 1 / 10 | 0,05 | 0,06 |
In this example for instance you would get:
- If selling USD: 1USD = 2EUR, or 1EUR = 0,5USD.
- If buying USD: 1USD = 2,2EUR, or 1EUR = 0,46USD.
- If selling CHF: 1CHF = (0,05 * 1/10) = 0,5EUR, or 1EUR = 2CHF.
- If buying CHF: 1CHF = (0,06 * 1/10) = 0,6EUR, or 1EUR = 1,67CHF.
Selling 1EUR you get 0,5USD, but you could only buy 0,46USD for 1EUR.
If you now buy 1USD and sell it immediately you will spend 2,2EUR buying it and will get only 2EUR back selling the bought 1USD,
therefore you will loose in such transaction 0,2EUR. Which is the difference between the buy and sell exchange rate.
Monex can now calculate how much is 1USD worth in CHF? (you are selling USD to buy CHF)
The calculation over the buy and sell exchange rate is: 1USD = 2EUR, where 1EUR = 1,67CHF, meaning 2EUR = 3,34CHF, and therefore 1USD = 3,34CHF.
And vice versa 1CHF is worth in USD? (you are selling CHF to buy USD)
The calculation over the buy and sell exchange rate is: 1CHF = 0,5EUR, where 1EUR = 2CHF, meaning 0,5EUR = 0,23USD, and therefore 1CHF = 0,23USD.
Comparing these two calculations you will get for 1USD = 3,34CHF, but could sell the 3,34CHF for only 0,77USD
